iOptimal Function Medicine Brain Wellness Clinic

Optimal hormonal levels are essential for optimal brain function. Disease, injury, stress and aging can lead to poor hormonal function, therefore hormonal replacement and optimization leads to improving brain function.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) are recognized as a contributing factor for hormonal deficiencies associated with mood disorder and personality disorder. There is multiple literature written on this phenomena, but not much is done in conventional medicine about this.

If you have suffered a physical injury to your head and subsequently suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), you may have a hormone deficiency.

Hormonal deficiencies

Hormonal deficiencies such as low Testosterone (Low T), Growth Hormone, Thyroids, Estradiol, and/ or DHEA’s may cause depression and other mood disorders.

Symptoms of hormonal deficiencies may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Mood Swings
  • Depression
  • Memory loss
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Bouts of anger
  • Sleeping deprivation
  • Learning disabilities
  • Loss of libido
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Obesity, particularly around abdomen
  • Muscular weakness
  • Loss of lean body mass
  • Diabetes
  • Increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and high Blood pressure
  • And a number of other medical conditions

The most common complaint of those diagnosed with PTSD and PCS, after suffering a trauma and then placed on anti-depressants, is that they can still have anxiety, depression, mood disorder, and many other symptoms.

Why is that?

Well, conventional medications such as antianxiety, antiseizure, antidepressants, antipsychotic and narcotics, do nothing to tackle the underlying causes that create the symptoms associated with PCS /TBI, because they fail to replace the missing neurosteroids (aka brain hormones).  Sadly, many individuals undergoing conventional treatments become further dysfunctional from the overload of medications and are unable to heal the root cause.

At iOptimal Functional Medicine, we have personalized protocols tailored to identify and tackle the underlying causes seen in PCS/TBI.  NP Alex has studied and follows Dr. Neal Rouzier Health Protocols.

We also have a patient centred approach. Hormones are only one piece of the puzzle, we address sleep, nutrition, stress and lifestyle because they are all important components in optimizing health and wellbeing.
